We're back: The 2011 Conservation Season Begins!

The Gordion Objects Conservation Program is gearing up for another season as the conservation team begins arriving this week. Our season began June 11 and will go through July 13. Conservators Angie Elliott and Jessie Johnson will switch off in the middle of the season and graduate student Lily Doan ('12) from the UCLA/Getty Program in Archaeological and Ethnographic Conservation will be around the entire season. Angie has begun to set up the conservation lab at the Gordion Museum so we will soon have more to tell you about our season's projects. In the meantime...

Our first challenge has been the thickest vegetation that we've ever seen at the site. The paths through the fields are barely visible and our shoes, socks, and pants are being attacked by painfully prickly hitchhikers. We hope to flatten the paths as we go to the museum more often. Our temporary solution has been to wear flip flops because they have nothing to grab!

Gordion

Gordion, located in central Turkey, has been occupied from the Bronze Age to modern times. King Midas and the Phrygians are undoubtedly the most famous inhabitants during the past 4,000 years but the legends surrounding the site are linked with other well known figures such as Alexander the Great who cut the Gordion Knot. Each year, an international team of archaeologists, conservators, and scientists travels to the site to continue research and preserve the material culture found there. Digital Gordion has much more information about the archaeology and the history of the excavations at the site.

Angie Elliott began working at Gordion in 2003 and has been the head of objects conservation since 2006. She currently works at the Baltimore Museum of Art in Maryland.

Jessie Johnson has done conservation at Gordion since 1989, and is now the Academic Director for the University of Delaware programs at the Iraqi Institute for the Conservation of Antiquities and Heritage in Erbil, Iraq.

Cricket Harbeck is a conservator in private practice in Milwaukee Wisconsin. She was the previous head of objects conservation at Gordion.

William Shelley is a graduate student in the UCLA/Getty Conservation of Archaeological and Ethnographic Materials Program in Los Angeles, California.
